Koen works as a director, writer, producer and photographer. Initially starting as a cinematographer shooting commercials and fiction films, Koen is now fully dedicated to directing documentary. His interest resides in social and human rights projects. With his documentary CASTING (2006) he became the first Dutch filmmaker to be nominated for a Spanish Academy Award (Goya). His more recent KARLA’S ARRIVAL (2011) was broadcast in 14 countries, competed in 40 festivals and won him a string of awards. This critically acclaimed film has been seen by over 4 million people. Currently, Koen combines part-time teaching with preparing two new documentary films, while taking on short international shooting assignments for US-based Micro Documentaries.
